Griha Praveshगृह प्रवेश. Conducted with complete vidhi by a background-verified Aacharya.

The Significance

Griha Pravesh marks the auspicious entry into a new home, invoking Vastu Purush — the presiding deity of the dwelling — for peace, prosperity and protection. Rooted in the Vastu Shastra tradition, the vidhi cleanses the space of any negative energy left by construction and sanctifies every corner before the family's first night under its roof. It is traditionally performed on a muhurat chosen for the family's nakshatra, most often at Griha Pravesh, after renovation, or when re-entering a home left vacant for long. The havan and Kalash sthapana together seal the home in blessings that are said to last a lifetime.

Benefits of Griha Pravesh

  • Removes vastu dosh and negative energy from the space
  • Invokes Vastu Purush for lasting protection
  • Blesses the family with health, harmony & prosperity
  • Sanctifies the kitchen, threshold and puja corner
  • Marks an auspicious, remembered beginning for the family

The Vidhi

Step by step

How a Griha Pravesh unfolds, from sankalp to aashirvad.

01

Sankalp

The homeowner takes a sankalp — a formal vow stating name, gotra and intent — before the Aacharya, dedicating the ritual to the new dwelling.

02

Ganesh Pooja

Bhagwan Ganesh is invoked first to remove obstacles and bless the proceedings with an auspicious start.

03

Kalash Sthapana

A sacred kalash filled with water, coins, betel leaves and a coconut is installed to represent divine presence within the home.

04

Vastu Shanti Havan

A havan is lit invoking Vastu Purush and the nine planets, with ahutis offered to pacify any dosh in the home's construction.

05

Navagraha Pooja

The nine celestial bodies are worshipped to ensure their favourable influence over the household going forward.

06

Griha Pravesh

The family formally enters the home — traditionally the woman of the house leads with a kalash or the right foot first — as mantras are chanted at the threshold.

07

Poornahuti & Aarti

A final offering completes the havan, followed by aarti, shanti path and distribution of prasad to family and guests.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best time to perform Griha Pravesh?

The most auspicious window is decided by your nakshatra and the home's facing direction. Our Aacharya can suggest a muhurat, or you may share one already chosen by your family jyotish.

Can Griha Pravesh be done after we've already moved in?

Yes — this is a common and accepted practice, sometimes called Apoorva or Sapoorva Griha Pravesh depending on how long the home has been occupied. The Aacharya adjusts the sankalp accordingly.

How long does the full ceremony take?

Typically 2.5 to 3 hours including Ganesh pooja, Kalash sthapana, the havan and the final aarti. Larger anusthans with multiple priests can be arranged for bigger homes.

Do we need to arrange the havan samagri ourselves?

No — Tapasvi's Aacharyas bring the complete havan kund and samagri list. You only need a handful of household items like a diya and flowers, listed at booking.
